The clock on my fifteen minutes of fame started ticking when I was
sent to cover the testimony of baseball players Mark McGwire,
Curt Schilling and others before the House Government Reform
Committee. My face ended up over McGwire's shoulder as he
sobbed through his testimony on ESPN, CNN, and all the other
networks. The day before, I was teamed with WSJ sports writer
Stefan Fatsis to write up the pending hearing. (His name should've
gone first, since he did the heavy lifting and fine writing, but that's
one of the perks of being an intern and working with incredibly
nice people. That, and getting to meet ex-slugger Jose Canseco
and his equally built lawyer. Whom he met at a gym.)
