  • Breaking news and managing coverage of local issues and Boston City Hall.

State House News Service, Boston, MA. Freelance Reporter. March 2006 - Present

  • Worked essentially as a utility infielder. Covered the 2008 Democratic National
    Convention in Denver, the 2006 gubernatorial campaign, the implementation of the
    state’s universal health care law, and the nomination of two judges to the Supreme
    Judicial Court. Also compiled daily a compendium of headlines from across
    Massachusetts, known as the “MASSterList.”

  • Managed political coverage of the four-way race for Boston mayor and the 15-person
    scrum running for Boston City Council At-Large. Also posted daily to the Dorchester
    Reporter's political blog, "The Lit Drop." Appeared on WBUR 90.9, the local NPR
    affiliate, to discuss the race.

The Dorchester Reporter, Dorchester, MA. Freelance Reporter. May 2004 – June 2009

  • Traveled the campaign trail, tracking Sen. Dianne Wilkerson’s failed 2008 re-
    election campaign and subsequent indictment on corruption charges, took part in
    coverage of the Boston area church closings for the community newspaper, as well
    as interviewing a returning Savin Hill soldier from Iraq. Was also “embedded” with a
    float for the annual Dorchester Day Parade, among other stories.

The Wall Street Journal, Washington, D.C. Reporting Intern. February 2005 – May 2005

  • Working out of the Washington bureau, covered general assignments out of
    Congress and federal agencies, and wrote up the efficiency of earwax removal kits,  
    economic indicators and baseball steroid hearings. Internship through the
    Washington Center for Politics and Journalism.

September 2002 – January 2006

  • As campus news editor of UMass Boston’s weekly student newspaper, supervised
    four to five writers, coordinated the news section, and recruited new staffers. As a
    reporter: Covered UMass Boston administration, faculty, student affairs, trustees and
    the UMass system president’s office. Other duties include compiling and editing the
    police log, news briefs, and wire services.

Media Nation, Boston, MA. Staff Reporter. July 2004

  • Reported and wrote articles for a two-page independent newspaper covering the
    media and media issues, a collaboration of the UMass Boston and Harvard
    University’s Nieman Foundation. Media Nation was printed as a supplement in the
    Boston Globe each day of the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

Honors

Recipient of the David Nyhan Journalism Award "for principled and professional work as a
student journalist" from the Center on Media and Society at UMass Boston, June 2005.

Education

September 2002 – Present:
Pursuing a degree in political science, with an interest in
presidential politics, and a minor in communication studies, at the University of
Massachusetts, Boston.

June 2002: Diploma, North Quincy High School, Quincy, MA. Activities included working as a
reporter for the North Star, the school newspaper, and a production manager for two plays
put together by the Drama Club.
